Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How much do the band cost?
A. The fee depends on various factors including the distance we have to travel, length of set required etc. Please contact us for a quote.

Q. How far will the band travel?
A. We generally only travel within 1 hours drive from Central Glasgow. We may be able to travel further afield however it is at our own discretion and there would be an additional charge.

Q. Can you perform our first dance?
A. We try and accomodate 1st dance requests wherever possible. We would have to know at least 6 weeks (preferably longer) in advance to give us time to learn the song. If we are unable to perform the song we will let you know as soon as possible and can arrange to have it played on CD.

Q. Do you play ceilidh dances?
A.
Yes! We generally perform a ceilidh section as part of our normal set (at no extra charge!) and are able to call out set dances if required. We are however NOT a dedicated ceilidh band and our ceilidh set would generally not be any longer than 30mins. We are able to perform the following dances - Waltz, Gay Gordons, Dashing White Sargeant and Strip the Willow

Q. How long does the band perform for?
A. A normal set is from 8pm until 12am with one 30min break for the buffet. This is subject to us gaining access to the venue to setup a minimum of 1 hour prior to the start of the performance. If you wish us to play an extended set or alter the performance time this must be negotiated with our agent at the time of booking and must also be agreed with the venue.

Q. What happens if the wedding or function is running late?
A. Unfortunately weddings rarely run on time. The Red Hot Poker Band however are always at the venue for the agreed start time. If your event runs late,
we are unable to play past our contracted finish time (usually 12am). We are unable to accept any responsibility for the timings of the event out with our control.

Q. What if someone in the band gets sick/injured?
A. As we are all professional musicians, we have a lot of contact with other musicians that can help out when required. If a member of the band is unable to perform at your event we have 'deps' to cover.

Q. What about the volume of the band?

A. Volume is always at the discretion of you, the client. It can however be difficult to balance the dynamic required for a good performance against requests for very low volume. Please bear in mind that we do have a live drummer that we are unable to simply reduce the volume of without affecting the overall dynamic of the performance.

Q. What is the band dress code?
A. We always dress appropriately for the function, suits and ties for the gents and a dress for Nicola. We will generally be wearing our normal clothes when we arrive for setup and will change once we have completed setup and soundcheck.

Q. Does the band have public liability insurance?
A. Yes. We have public liability insurance to the sum of £10,000,000. We can provide a certificate if required.

Q. Can guests come up and join the band on-stage for a song?
A. Sorry, under the terms of our public liability insurance, use of the our equipment or stage area is strictly prohibited during the course of the performance.

Q. Can we come and see the band live?
A. Unfortunately, as we mostly play at private weddings that have been booked through agencies, we are unable to arrange viewings ourselves. However, you may wish to try contacting our agents, it may be possible for them to arrange a viewing.

Please Note - when we are playing at venues that don't have a stage for the band, ie. - venues where we are set up at ground level next to the dancefloor, we have a tensa-barrier that we place at the front of the band to avoid any accidents. We use this to try and ensure that folk dancing in front of us are less likely to step backwards and trip over our monitors, leads etc. This is placed there mainly for the safety of your guests.
